What is the Curse and How Do You Escape It?

Deuteronomy 11:26–28 "See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today, to go after other gods that you have not known.

Question:

What is a curse, and how do you escape it?

Answer:

A curse is a continual work of evil that overcomes the soul causing it to sin continually without an escape. It is a perpetual (continual) backsliding away from God.

Explanation:

There is a lot to say about curses in the Bible. Instead of defining all the curses or explaining them in detail, we can narrow it down to a simple principle. (Ezekiel 18:4 …the soul that sins will die.) A curse is a continual work of evil that overcomes the soul causing it to sin continually without an escape. It's when a soul gets caught in a continuous loop of sin and death and, therefore, cannot find repentance because of the continual turning away from God's word. (The soul deals with the earth, so a curse's effect on the soul is a continual manifestation of evil deeds.) Jeremiah explains this idea very well.

Jeremiah 8:4-6 "You shall say to them (the people of God, the sons of Judah), Thus says the LORD: When men fall, do they not rise again? If one turns away, does he not return? Why then has this people turned away in perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return. I have paid attention and listened, but they have not spoken rightly; no man relents (repents) of his evil, saying, 'What have I done?' Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle.

We see here that a soul can continue in sin for many generations. Paul referred to this when he said that in Adam, all die. Even those who have not committed the same sin as Adam are still in a curse of sin and death. If you remain in Adam's consciousness, you will continually find yourself repeating his sins and yours. (It's called perpetually falling.) Jesus and Stephen referenced this with the Pharisees whose fathers killed the prophets, and generations later, their children are still doing the same evil deeds.

What to do:

Breaking the curse relies upon true repentance. So the simple answer is to accept the gift of Jesus Christ and repent of the evil that you are doing. Jesus broke the curse of sin and death by crucifying the old man, the first Adam, and changing his curse into the blessing of a new man. Believe in Jesus, do His works, and you will break the curse of your generations.
